Taking the bull by the horns this month was Brad. After his last sterling performance, there were high expectations.The pre-drinks venue was Brew Warf Yard in Borough Market. I was last to arrive and saw the usual suspects with one new exception, it was Frank the Tank! Roger was joining us a guest while Andre gallivants around South America with his new fiancé. As all of these big events happening with steak club members, there can only be one conclusion… there’s something in the steak! Congrats Andre!
After a few minutes, the cab dropped us off in Cornhill Road, near Bank Station. Brad walked straight past our restaurant and back tracked after he heard me say the name, The Door, so easy to miss. The restaurant’s oozing chic sophistication. Same with the clientele - I did notice a lady who was well on the eccentric side (so did Brad as she had a puzzling chat to him (not with him) on our way out.
Gary, Brad, Roger, Stacy and I jostled for seat positions and were greeted soon by our waiter, not waitress, so don’t expect many points here (good service and friendliness though). The waiter did bring to our attention that there’s a Chile Ribeye Waygu steak on the menu. “Fed on beer, corn and maize, these animals are massaged daily helping to create excellent marbling through each cut.” – what a life! We couldn’t turn this down and arranged for it to come as a starter to be shared among the boys. It was good, but I wasn’t blown away as I expected to be. £42 for about 8oz / 10 oz.
Onto the mains and I ordered the Ribeye on the bone. When it arrived however it was a Sirloin. The waiter did offer to get the correct steak grilled and brought out, but I said I’d go with the Sirloin so I could eat with the rest of Steak Club. A complementary bottle of wine soon arrived as the Door’s apology. The steak comes in with a solid score, and can’t mark them down as mistakes happen and they made amends.
Brad chose the Argentinian Malbec, Altos Las Hormigas, Mendoza 2010 (£23.50), and The Door gave us another of the same complimentary, thus only one wine review this month.
The bill including wagyu starter, 2 wines (1 complementary) steaks and sides came to £62 per head.
Afterwards we headed to the Pitcher and Paino next door to get the strafdops out of the way. Late reviews, lies (Gary not telling steak club about a big event as soon as it happened) etc culminated in 20 shooter roulette. Ouch! Being in now more jovial mood, I inferred there was a birthday in the house to which the shooter girl arranged for a special complementary birthday shooter. Let’s just say that Spur could learn something on how birthdays should be celebrated!
Steak – 7 x 5 = 35
Venue = 7
Menu = 7.5
Wine = 7.5
Value for money = 7
Waitress = 4
Total = 68
Go to The Door for an all-round solid steak showing in the City where anything could happen.
