The Door - Stacy's Review

The London restaurants must be injecting their steaks with some form of aphrodisiac as the number of married or engaged members has trebled in the last couple of months. A very big congratulations to Andre and Caren on their great news which I am sure we will celebrate on Andre’s return. In the interim it is a pleasure to have Roger “Frank the Tank” Dietrich along as a guest.

This is the first time I have submitted my review late and besides having to have three strafdops for this the other negative is that the details of the evening are a bit sketchy although I am not sure if this is due to “Frank the Tanks” birthday celebrations.

It was Brad’s night to organise and pre drinks started at the Brew Wharf Yard in Borough Market which was a sneaky venue as there were two potential dinner venues within view. Things got off to a wet start with a massive downpour which accounted for Wassie arriving past the strafdop curfew, I think it was an early sign that he was feeling thirsty tonight. After our usual catch up it was time for steak!

Brad had us all guessing with The Pig and Black & Blue within spitting distance. Nevertheless he lead us to the main road, had us hop in a cab and across the river we went to Bank. We had to hop out and walk a bit further and we would have had to walk quite a bit further if it wasn’t for the eagle eye of Wassie who spotted the venue without even knowing it.

Our venue for the evening was The Door which felt very posh on arrival. It is a new addition to the London restaurant scene which is a smart Bistro style venue. The restaurant section didn’t look the biggest but was laid out well and even though we were seated in the middle of the action it was sufficiently quiet and felt spacious. The well designed bar also added to the smart spacious feel of the place.

The menu we were presented with had a reasonable selection of cuts with the sizes a bit on the small side. The good thing was the choice between Argentine vs US cuts which added a bit more diversity to the menu. One item that was spotted was the Waygu (Kobe style) which we decided to share between us as a starter.

The steak had two chances to impress on this occasion but unfortunately, first up, the Waygu didn’t quite live up to our expectations at £42. Although it was very tender it wasn’t as stand out as I was expecting. I went for the Argentinean rib eye this time round and although not a bad steak it lacked the taste and tenderness I was hoping for. Brad did well with the sides, in particular the sweet potato wedges.

We had a very good Argentinean malbec to start, a perfect accompaniment for the steak. Normally we try a different red wine for our second bottle but due to the waiter getting Wassie’s steak order wrong we had the same malbec on the house. Normally this would be a no no but given the quality of the wine we were all very happy with this. It was also a good gesture by the waiter given his error which helped the restaurants cause.

On the waitress front, well we didn’t quite have one although there were a couple around. Our waiter was pleasant enough although he did get Wassie’s steak order wrong but to his credit he did follow this up with a complimentary bottle of wine and a free round of Limoncello’s at the end of the meal.

I think the meal came to £62 per head which is a steal for the steak club. This was partly due to the free bottle of wine but given we had a £42 starter the evening was very good value.

Post dinner drinks took place a couple of doors down from the restaurant at the Pitcher & Piano and has to rank up there as the best one yet. We seemed to have developed a habit of having a rather large round of Russian roulette with vodka, tequila, gin and water. I managed to avoid this the last time around but I think I paid my dues this time as I didn’t have any luck finding a water. The highlight of the evening was definitely “Frank the Tanks” birthday celebrations which we are all looking forward to at our next outing.

All in all a very good night out and I would probably venture back to The Door to give it another try.

Thanks Brad
