There seems to be something in the London steaks these days with first Wassie and now Andre popping the question to their respective better halves. A big congratulations to Andre and Caren on their engagement – great news that will be duly celebrated upon Andre’s return from his travels.
With Andre away on his sojourn with his fiancé, Steak Club had the pleasure of inviting Roger (aka Frank the Tank) as a guest.
Brad was host for the evening and had us meet in Brew Wharf Yard in Borough Market for pre-drinks. Borough Market is not a area I know particularly well but I’ll definitely be exploring there a bit more often – very trendy with a good selection of drinking spots and (more importantly) good options for steak with both the Ginger Pig and Black & Blue in the vicinity.
With those two steak options right there, I had assumed we’d be staying in the area for our meal – however all too soon Brad had us finishing up our pre-drinks and rustled us into a cab to take us back into the City and we soon arrived at The Door.
The Door is quite an up-market venue with very smart décor – great to take a date to! We were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff (who were all male – an unfortunate fact for the “Waitress” rating) and quickly settled at our table. The restaurant area isn’t the biggest but its intelligently laid out so felt more spacious than it actually was. Another thing to note is the trendy bar located in the venue.
Overall service was good, though the lack of female attention means that the Waitress category has to inevitably be marked down quite severely. The waiter did mess up Wassie’s order but importantly he got mine right. Also, to be fair he did present us with a free bottle of wine as an apology – Steak Club can be a forgiving bunch when there is free wine on offer (as long as its not something ridiculous like serving our steak well-done or putting salad on our plates…).
We only got to try one selection of wine that night (Brad forgot to email out the wine details so I’ve had to peek at his review to get the name) – the Malbec, Altos Las Hormigas, Mendoza 2010. Luckily this turned out to be a great choice by Brad and is a perfect companion to a nice juicy steak!
As a starter, we got a portion of the Wagyu beef to share amongst us. It’s the first time I’ve had Wagyu and unfortunately it wasn’t quite as awesome as I’d imagined it would be. Don’t get me wrong – it was extremely tender, full of flavour etc etc but it just wasn’t the equivalent of a steak orgasm that I’d pictured it. I guess that’s the danger of building things up too much in your mind….
As a main I went for the 16 oz ribeye-on-the-bone (medium rare). It had nice flavour, though a little let down by texture and tenderness. Overall, I’d rate it as a good quality steak but not quite outstanding, especially considering the price which was a little on the high side.
Overall, I really enjoyed our evening at The Door and would be quite happy to recommend it to others. Brad – thanks for a great night!
Unfortunately it seems that we haven’t quite learnt our lesson that “This is NOT a drinking club” and we all ended up at Pitcher and Piano to clear the outstanding strafdops and to celebrate Frank the Tank’s “birthday”. Not content with plain old strafdops, the stakes were raised with Strafdop Roulette – fortunately this didn’t end as badly as it could have for me and I did score two waters in the deal. However, this didn’t save me from a very sore head the next morning (and another round of us all swearing that next time we’ll take it easy).
